Using Voice Mode for Hands-Free Conversations

Speak to Lumen and hear grounded answers read back to you. Voice Mode lets you search your knowledge base without touching the keyboard.

This guide is for everyone on the team. Voice Mode is available to anyone who can use the Ask interface. If you have not yet tried asking a question, complete the Your First Search and Your First Question guide first.

Start a hands-free voice conversation with Lumen. By the end of this guide, you will know how to activate Voice Mode, speak your questions, hear grounded answers read back to you, and use continuous mode for back-and-forth conversations.

1

Open the Ask Interface

Click Ask in the center navigation bar. This opens the chat interface where you normally type questions to Lumen.

2

Tap the Headphones Icon

Look for the headphones icon in the chat input area. Tap it to launch Voice Mode. Your browser may ask for microphone permission the first time. Grant access to continue.

Voice Mode follows a simple four-step cycle. Each step is represented by the fluid, animated orb at the center of the screen. The orb responds in real time to both your voice and the AI response, creating a natural visual connection to the conversation.

Tap the OrbTap the orb to begin. Its surface ripples and responds to your voice as it listens.
Speak Your QuestionAsk your question naturally, just as you would type it. When you are finished, tap the orb again or pause briefly and the system will detect that you have stopped speaking.
Lumen ThinksThe orb churns with faster motion while Lumen searches your knowledge base, retrieves relevant passages, and synthesizes a grounded answer.
Hear the ResponseLumen reads the answer aloud. The orb pulses in rhythm with the speech. The full text response and source citations also appear in the chat transcript below, so you can review them later.
Pro Tip: Voice Mode works great for quick questions while multitasking. Need to check a policy detail while working on something else? Tap the orb, ask your question, and hear the answer without switching context. It is especially useful for reviewing meeting notes, checking procedures, or getting quick summaries on the go.

Now that you know how to use Voice Mode, try using the text-based Ask interface for more complex queries where you want to review citations in detail, save answers to your knowledge base, or explore follow-up topics.
