MCP. Model Context Protocol.
An open standard from Anthropic for connecting AI models to external tools and data sources. Lets any compliant AI assistant access any compliant tool without custom integration work. Think of it as USB for AI applications.
Before MCP, every AI product had to write custom code to connect to every tool. MCP makes "connect any AI to any tool" the new default. The integration tax drops to near zero.
What this looks like in practice
What problem MCP actually solves.
Without a shared standard, an AI product wanting access to ten tools needs ten custom integrations. Each tool wanting to expose itself to ten AI products needs ten custom integrations. With MCP, the tool exposes itself once. Any compliant AI can use it. The integration burden goes from N times M to N plus M.
Why it matters for an agent's reach.
The value of an agent is bounded by what tools it can use. Custom integrations cap that at whatever the product team has shipped. MCP raises the ceiling. Any tool with an MCP server becomes immediately reachable. New tool launches Tuesday, your agents can use it Wednesday.
The gap between "supports MCP" and "uses it well."
A product can advertise MCP support and still implement the easy 80%. Reading data through MCP servers is straightforward. Writing data, handling auth, routing across multiple servers, deciding which server to call for ambiguous requests. Those are harder. The protocol is settled. The implementations vary.
Open protocols beat custom integrations.
Simply Asking treats MCP as the connective tissue between Lumen and the rest of your stack. As MCP server coverage grows across the industry, your brain's reach grows with it without us shipping a custom integration for every new tool.
